Place a scented candle in the room where you are staying, on a stable, heat-resistant surface, sheltered from draughts and away from anything that could catch fire. The living room suits it best. In rooms you only pass through, such as the entrance, or in the bedroom at bedtime, a Scented Stone takes over, without flame or heat.
The rules for every room
- A flat, stable surface, heat-resistant: a tray, a console, a coffee table, rather than a fragile piece of furniture or a pile of books.
- Sheltered from draughts. An open window, a swinging door, a fan or an air-conditioning vent make the flame flicker: it smokes and hollows the wax on one side.
- Away from anything that could catch fire. Keep at least 50 cm between the candle and curtains, tablecloths or papers, and leave about fifteen centimetres between two lit candles. Avoid a shelf directly above the flame, too.
- Away from heat sources: a radiator, a fireplace or direct sunlight soften the wax.
- Out of reach of children and pets, and never unattended: a candle is lit where you are and put out when you leave the room.
The wick, the length of each burn, how to put it out: our advice on how to burn a scented candle guides you step by step.
In the living room, at the heart of the room
This is the room where you stay, where a candle naturally finds its place. Set it in the centre, on a coffee table or a console, rather than in a corner: the fragrance then reaches the whole space. Allow one to two hours of burning for the room to take on the scent and for its trail to linger once the flame is out. If you are hosting, light it an hour before your guests arrive.
For an afternoon of reading or a shared lunch, Lee La Wa Dee and its bouquet of white flowers. At the end of the day, Éclat du Kerala, woody, soft and milky.
In the entrance, a first trail
The entrance sets the tone of the home, but it is a room you pass through, and the front door creates draughts. Rather than a flame, place a Scented Stone on the console: carved from Lutetian limestone in La Roche-Guyon, it diffuses fragrance without flame or heat. A few drops are enough to welcome your guests from the doorstep.
For a fresh, bright welcome, Citrus Maxima or Jardin d’Embruns. For winter evenings, Sancta Myrrha, amber and resinous.
In the kitchen and dining room
At the table, a candle’s fragrance mingles with the food: keep it aside during the meal. In the kitchen, keep it away from the hob, tea towels and the extractor hood, which draws in the air. The right moment comes afterwards: lit once the table is cleared, a candle with fresh notes renews the atmosphere. Citrus Maxima and its citrus notes, or Jardin d’Embruns and its sea herbs.
In the bedroom, the flame then the stone
A candle can accompany your evening reading, as long as you put it out before going to sleep: never fall asleep with a flame burning. For the fragrance to linger, entrust the night to a Scented Stone on the bedside table. Without flame or heat, it carries the ritual on with complete peace of mind.
Our scent of rest, Sancta Myrrha, comes both as a candle and as a Scented Stone.
In the bathroom
Small and enclosed, a bathroom takes on a scent quickly. For a bath, place the candle on a stable surface, away from towels and the shower curtain, and keep it in sight. Lee La Wa Dee accompanies an evening bath, Jardin d’Embruns the start of the day.
In the study
On a desk, between papers and a screen, a flame does not really belong. Place the candle a little to one side, on a side table or a console, or choose the Scented Stone, which fits in the palm of your hand. Ode au Cyprès, woody and fresh, accompanies moments of calm and concentration.

These are suggestions, not rules. For a fragrance that follows you from room to room, the Ritual Set brings together the Signature Candle and the Miniature Stone Set in the same fragrance, in each of our six scents: the flame where you are, the stone in another room. Frequently asked questions
Where should you put a scented candle in a room?
In the centre of the room rather than in a corner, on a stable, heat-resistant surface, sheltered from draughts and at least 50 cm from curtains, tablecloths or papers.
Can you leave a candle burning in a bedroom?
Yes, as long as you are in the room and awake. Always put it out before going to sleep; a Scented Stone can take over for the night, without a flame.
Why does my candle barely scent the room?
Often because of a draught, a burn that was too short, or a first burn that hollowed the wax. Let it burn for one to two hours, until the whole surface has melted, with the windows closed.
Where should you place a Scented Stone?
Where the air moves gently, near a window left ajar: in an entrance, a study or a bedroom. A few drops scent a small room for 24 to 48 hours.
