The rapeseed wax candle: why we chose it

We chose rapeseed wax because it is entirely plant-based. It is made from the oil of rapeseed, a plant grown for its seeds, whereas paraffin is a wax of fossil origin, a product of petroleum refining. Our 240 g Signature Candles are poured with care in the Loire Valley, from rapeseed sourced in Europe, free of paraffin, and offer about 60 hours of burning. What is rapeseed wax?Rapeseed belongs to the Brassicaceae family, that of cabbage and mustard. It is grown mainly for its oil-rich seeds. In spring, its yellow flowers colour the fields. To become wax, its oil is hydrogenated. This process, common in the vegetable oil industry, makes it solid. The result is a wax of plant origin, ready to be poured into a jar.Rapeseed wax or paraffin: two originsParaffin is a wax of fossil origin. It is most often obtained from petroleum, as a by-product of lubricating oil refining. Developed in the nineteenth century, it transformed candle making because it cost less than beeswax or tallow. Both waxes burn and carry a fragrance. What sets them apart, first of all, is their origin.Rapeseed wax comes from a plant, sown and harvested every year.Paraffin comes from a fossil resource, petroleum.A flame is still a flame. Plant wax or not, any burning calls for precautions, and we do not claim otherwise. Our choice is one of coherence: a house born of a botanical heritage owed its fragrances a material that comes from plants.Poured in the Loire Valley, in a Tuscan jarEach of our six Signature Candles weighs 240 g. It is poured with care in the Loire Valley, into a jar crafted by master glassmakers in Tuscany. Its fragrance is composed with a French perfumer, then developed in Grasse: it contains between 75% and 90% ingredients of natural origin. To choose among the six, let our short scent quiz guide you.How to burn your candle wellA plant wax asks for a little attention. That attention is what lets you fully enjoy your candle’s 60 or so hours of burning. The first lightingThe first time you light it, let the wax melt across the whole surface, right to the edge of the jar. Allow one to two hours. Wax keeps the memory of this first melt pool. If it stays narrow, the candle may tunnel down over the following burns.Every time you light itTrim the wick to 5 mm before each use. A wick that is too long gives a taller flame and an uneven burn.Do not let the candle burn for more than two hours at a time.Put it out with a candle snuffer.Place it on a stable, heat-resistant surface, away from draughts.Never leave it unattended, and put it out before leaving the room.A second life for the Tuscan jarThe Signature Candle jar is designed to be reused and refilled. When only about a centimetre of wax remains, stop lighting it: the candle has done its work. Let the jar cool, remove the remaining wax with a spoon, then wash it in hot soapy water. Once empty, it can hold a few flowers, brushes or small treasures.Between lightings, the monogrammed glass lid crowns the candle and preserves the essences of its fragrance. It too is crafted in Tuscany, by master glassmakers who have inherited a craft passed down from generation to generation.Frequently asked questionsDo your candles contain paraffin? No. Our Signature Candles are poured in an entirely plant-based wax, made from rapeseed sourced in Europe, free of paraffin. How long does a Signature Candle last?About 60 hours for 240 g of wax, provided you follow a few simple steps: a complete first burn, a wick trimmed to 5 mm, and no more than two hours each time. Why is my candle tunnelling in the centre? It is often the sign of a first burn that was too short, because wax keeps the memory of its first melt pool. From now on, let it melt to the edge each time you light it, within the two-hour limit.Does a plant wax candle need precautions?Yes, like any flame. Place it on a stable surface, air the room regularly and never leave it unattended.
